CARMEN IS A NICARAGUAN & IRISH AMERICAN CREATOR BASED IN LOS ANGELES
Carmen spent her early childhood dancing in the marijuana smoke & sage air at "Libre", an artist's commune in the Sangre De Cristo mountain range in Colorado. Her artistic sensibilities were developed among the adults in her childhood; dancers, sculptors, poets and musicians. Carmen minored in modern dance at U.C. Berkeley, where she graduated with a B.A. in Social Science. After college she engaged in an intensive study of the craft of acting at Susan Batson Studios in New York City. This intense study of dance and acting craft informs her writing and is evident in her ability to create powerful word-pictures depicting both the inner and outer lives of her characters. As a professional educator in Los Angeles, Carmen has sought to encourage inner-city youth to engage in their educational experience with curiosity and to strive in their development of self-love. Carmen earned her Master's in Education from U.C.L.A.
Over her lifetime Carmen has produced many poems. Her first poetry book was self-published when she was 7 and featured a poem about her cat with the refrain "purrita-purrita purr-purr". Writing became a primary focus after college with the short story "Salome's Dream", as well as a short film project based on a short story by Isabel Allende. She consistently honed her craft in workshops and classes including workshop series with the poet/writer Ruth Forman and classes at U.C.L.A. Extension. One favorite project from these years is a short film script titled "Maya, Illusion, Water", about a young mother's psychic friendship with the Voodoo priestess and filmmaker, Maya Deren. Carmen's current focus is on creating books for middle grade students that address the need for compelling stories for urban children and children from communities of color.
